Spooktacular Cakes

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! If you've read any of my previous posts, you may have noticed I have a major sweet tooth, so obviously I'm all for Halloween and what's a better way to celebrate Halloween than with a blog post about cake?!

Every morning, on the way to university I walk past Designer Cakes by Paige, an independent designer cake shop in the West End of Glasgow. I am always in awe of the amazing creations in their window but their Halloween display is something else!

The evil minion is a personal favourite!

The staff are obviously very talented and each design is as detailed and original as the next.

Unfortunately, this post was a bit of a spur of the moment idea and so the pictures are from my phone instead of my camera which doesn't quite do the pieces justice.

Aside from celebration cakes, the shop also sells a range of cupcakes and push pops. Having just suffered through a day of lectures and tutorials, I decided to reward myself with a cake to see if they tasted as good as they looked - all in the name of research, right?!

The owner, Lesley, suggested I try a push pop, so I did. It was fab and I can now confirm, the cakes definitely taste as good as they look. Layers of delicious chocolate sponge, chocolate frosting and vanilla cream :) If you ever find yourself on Great Western Road in the West End, I suggest you give one of these little delights a try!

Look at that chocolatey goodness!

In case you want to check out any more of the fabulous cake designs, I've left a link to the shop's website here :)

I'm going to be spending my Halloween with some friends from home who I'm really excited to catch up with after we all went our separate ways to start uni!

How will you be spending your night?

Hope you liked the pictures!

Lots of Love,

A Famous Piece of Pie - Throwback Thursday

I love looking back at old photos and sharing memories which is probably why I'm particularly fond of the 'Throwback Thursday' hash tag on Instagram. Blogging gives me an opportunity to write about what I want and so some Thursdays, I'd like to use the Throwback Thursday hash tag to share a memory with you all!

Loving life with my left over pie!
This summer, my family and I took a bit of a road trip across Florida and Louisianian. Whilst in Florida, I got the chance to visit Yoder's Amish Restaurant as featured on 'Man vs. Food'.

Man vs Food!
Yoder's is located in an Amish village in Sarasota and is famous for it's homemade pies and comfort food. The portions were absolutely HUMONGOUS and having just had lunch I opted for a 'Pie Taster' as opposed to a full slice. I went for the Peanut Butter Cream pie as this was featured on 'Man vs Food' and I have a small obsession with peanut butter - I kid you not, I will eat it with anything, seriously.

Yes, this was just a 'Pie Taster'!
My goodness, I now know why this restaurant is famous for it's pie...the pie was incredible! So lovely and creamy with a peanut butter crumb base and extra peanut butter crumbs sprinkled on top - I'm all for these peanut butter crumbs! It was so good I swear, I'd go all the way back to Florida just for another slice of that pie!!

Now for the serious question, how do you feel about peanut butter?! Comment below!

Smile and Be Happy

I love this photo from a trip up North in April, I thought it was quite apt for this post!
Once a week, I volunteer with the Hospital Broadcasting Service Hospital Radio in Glasgow, this is something that I really enjoy and will no doubt post more about in the future. At the minute, I am a Request Collector and so alternate my weeks between visiting patients in the hospital and working at the studio.

This week I was at the hospital where I visit the wards and find out if the patients have anything they'd like to hear when the programme is broadcast. A lot of the patients are happy to get involved and tend to have a request or two. This week however, I visited an older lady who was genuinely excited at the prospect of having a song played just for her. She took a while to mull it over and ended up requesting a hymn. Before I left she told me how grateful she was that I had popped by and what a lovely idea the Hospital Radio was.

I totally agree with her, the Hospital Radio is a lovely idea and for me, it's a nice opportunity to speak to a whole range of interesting people. I always try to go in with a really positive attitude as I guess a lot of the patients will be feeling down but never have I had a patient be quite so happy to see me as this lady was.

Now I've been feeling pretty sorry for myself recently, a result of a combination of shorter days and ever increasing piles of university work but it was so nice to see how I could really brighten someone's day by taking some time out of my own and just being happy.

As cliche as it sounds, life is too short to focus on the negatives all the time and you never know how your positivity will affect someone else.

So, whenever possible, I hope you are able to smile and be happy, it might just make someone's day.

Lots of Love

Lush - Candy Mountain

While in Edinburgh at the weekend, I couldn't resist a look in Lush at all their amazing new Halloween and Christmas products. We all know that when in Lush, a 'look' is never just a look and I ended up treating myself to the Candy Mountain bubble bar from the Christmas range.

Not only did it look really cute and glittery but it smelt AMAZING, really sweet and blackcurrant-y, similar to The Comforter - my all time favourite Lush bubble bar.

I always find it best to use Lush products as soon as possible after buying them, when they're at their freshest and when is a more appropriate time for a relaxing bath than a rainy Sunday evening? Perfect!

It looked even better inside!

Crumbling half the bar into the bath turned the water a really lovely light pink and produced mountains of bubbles. My bath smelt incredible - even more so due to my plum Yankee candle! - and my skin was left feeling super soft with a faint shimmer. The glitter in this particular bar was so fine that my bath wasn't a state afterwards, which is always a result and I was left feeling very relaxed and smelling of blackcurrants :). There is not much to be said about Lush Bubble Bars as they are always of such a high standard but this one was so good I had to share it.

I will certainly be using Candy Mountain again and am excited to try more of the new range. Have you tried any of the Lush Christmas range yet? What did you think?

Top 5 Disney Films

Disney have just announced that the next animated film that they will release is Moana, set to hit cinemas in 2016. Now, I am a HUGE Disney fan and this announcement got me thinking about how many amazing films Disney have released.

Seen as my blog is supposed to be a little insight into my world, I decided to compile a list of my top 5 favourite Disney films for you, lovely reader :)

5. Beauty and the Beast

As a child, I hated scary films but loved films that were that little bit darker. For me, the Beast was the exact right amount of scary to make me love the film but not scar me for life! Hoorah!

4. Sleeping Beauty

Definitely one of the darker Disney fairytales, Sleeping Beauty was my favourite for a long time! I even used to introduce myself as Aurora - what can I say, I was a fangirl from a young age!

3. UP

This was the first animated film to make me cry and I do not cry at films - no, not even Titanic! The storyline to UP is adorable and any film that can make me laugh and cry in the space of five minutes is a winner in my eyes!

2. Finding Nemo

A film about a clownfish really shouldn't work but it totally does!

And now, drum roll please!!!

1. The Lion King

The Lion King is a beautiful movie with stunning scenery, brilliant sountrack and hilarious characters (read Timon and Pumbaa.) But there is one reason and one reason alone why this is my all time favourite Disney film and it's this scene right here:

Need I say anymore?!

Do you have a favourite Disney film? Comment below!

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

I was nominated by the lovely Lauren for the Sisterhood of World Bloggers Award! I love finding new blogs and I think following these awards is a great way of doing it :)

For this award, you must:

1. Thank the blogger that nominated you and link back to their blog.
2. Put the award logo on your blog.
3. Answer their ten questions.
4. Make up ten new questions for your nominees.
5. Nominate 10 bloggers for the award.

1. Best movie you've seen this year?

Hmm this took me a while, I love watching movies in the house but I totally don't go to the cinema enough. I know it didn't come out this year but I saw The Internship for the first time and I loved that - does that count?!

2.What's your most worn piece of clothing/accessory?

For my 18th Birthday, my grandma got me a beautiful Tiffany necklace and I wear that everyday. I was never really one for necklaces before but I feel a bit naked if I don't have it on now!

3. What's your favourite/most inspiring place to blog?

I'm not sure about inspiring but my favourite place to blog is definitely my bed!

4. Do you have any strange or interesting hobbies?

I dance, read and write but I wouldn't call them particularly strange or interesting hobbies. I do however, have a slight obsession with Harry Potter and have quite a large collection of merchandise...can we call that interesting instead of strange?!

5. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I have always, always, always wanted to be an author, that's the dream! However, when I was growing up I had a few side careers planned, I was either going to be a marine biologist, a fashion designer or a spy...

6. One essential beauty product you can't live without?

Maybelline Mega Plush mascara

7. Why did you start blogging?

Having just started university I wanted to make sure I had a space where writing could still be a hobby rather than a chore just for essays etc. so I thought I'd take up my own little space on the internet!

8. What's the meaning behind the name of your blog?

I had no idea what I was going to write about on this blog when I started it, I knew it was never going to specifically be a beauty blog or a fashion or cooking blog, just my thoughts and general ramblings so I thought The World According to Heather was a pretty apt name :)

9. If you could travel through time, where would you go?

Back to the 12th and 13th of July this year, I went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida and they were seriously two of the best days of my life!

10. If you could have any supper power what would it be and what would you do with it?

The ability to fly! It would be amazing to see the world...and may also help me get places on time more often...

My Questions:

1.Where are you from?
2. Where are you now?
3. Where was your favourite ever holiday/trip?
4. Where in the world would you most like to visit?
5. Sweet or savory?
6. What is your favourite Harry Potter book/movie?
7. Are you currently watching any TV series?
8. City life or country life?
9. Who is your favourite Disney princess?
10. What one word describes 2014 for you so far?

My nominees:

1. The lovely Mimmi Muted Mornings
2. The fab Lindsay Scottish Outlander
3. The brilliant Sarah daydreams of summertime

Feel free to answer my questions even if you're not nominated, I'd love to hear your answers :)

Lots of Love

Meeting Friends in Edinburgh

Today, me and mum headed into Edinburgh to meet some of our friends from London who were up for a visit. Although we were only meeting our friends for a few hours, we decided to make a day of it and went for a bit of a wander and a shop too! Despite the wind, Edinburgh was looking as beautiful as always.

It turned out our friends' train was a bit delayed so obviously we had to pop to Millie's Cookies in the station while we waited. The cookie cupcakes are my absolute favourites so I got one of the new Halloween editions to try - I mean it would have been rude not to!

By the time we'd met our friends the weather had taken a turn for the worst so we headed straight for a coffee and a catch up. We discovered The Fruitmarket Gallery Cafe right next to Waverly Station. This was such an adorable little cafe nestled in the back of a bookshop with huge glass windows looking out onto Market Street, a perfect spot for people watching!

After much deliberation, I opted for a chocolate brownie from the excellent cake selection - can you tell I've got a bit of a sweet tooth?! It was absolutely fabulous, crunchy on top and gooey in the middle! (Is this post making you hungry yet??)

After a lovely long catch up, we decided to brave the weather and show our friends a bit of Edinburgh. We headed along Princes Street and up onto George Street where I saw my first Christmas tree of the year at The Dome. It was an amazing tree but still a wee bit too early, would you not agree?

Pretty impressive Christmas tree!
By this time it had started to get dark seen as the clocks have gone back and all too soon we had to say goodbye. There's nothing I love more than spending time with my family and friends and today was especially nice seen as we've not seen these particular friends in such a long time! It was also really great to be back in Edinburgh seen as I've been sending so much time in Glasgow of recent.

Have you ever been to Edinburgh? If you have, what did you think? If you haven't, would you like to?

Things I Love About Autumn

Autumn is most definitely upon us once again, the nights are drawing in and the days are getting colder and I am most definitely not complaining. Here's just a few reasons why I love Autumn:

Autumn walks
Crunchy leaves
Hats and gloves and cosy scarves

Warm drinks (you can't beat a pumpkin spiced latte!!)
Winter coat shopping always begins in Autumn
Being snuggled inside when it's miserable outside

Knitted jumpers

Duvet days
Autumn colours being everywhere from shops to trees

And of course, Autumn means Christmas is just around the corner, what's not to love?!

How do you feel about Autumn? Comment below!

Lovely Linlithgow

This week, Glasgow experienced some weather which can only be described as Scottish; cold, damp and very, very grey. As much as I love the excitement of city life, the vast span of concrete buildings and high rise flats in a city like Glasgow just makes life that little bit more miserable when the weather is so dull. No wonder I was more excited than usual for a trip home!

I'm so lucky to have grown up in a town as beautiful as Linlithgow and getting out for a walk in the fresh air (something which is very limited in Glasgow!) was all I needed to make me feel a million times better.

Part of the reason I started a blog was to give me a chance to improve my photography so I made sure to take my camera out with me.

This post is essentially just a post for me to show off how beautiful Linlithgow is!!

Linlithgow was looking very Autumnal and lovely

Bit of public art!

Few places can boast the birth place of Mary Queen of Scots!

What are you looking at?
What do you think? Have you ever visited Linlithgow?

I hope you enjoyed the pictures!

My First Post

So, this is it, my first ever blog post!

I guess I should introduce myself, I'm Heather McCorriston, I'm 18 and I've decided to start a blog in order to give my writing a bit of a focus. I've always loved creative writing and writing to share my thoughts and feelings on a whole range of different subjects. Having just started university I want to ensure that I always have a place to write what I like as opposed to just essays and assignments.

I'm not really sure what my posts are going entail, perhaps recipes and day trips or wishlists and my random thoughts. Right now, your guess is as good as mine!

I don't expect many people will ever find this blog but for those of you who do, I hope you enjoy this little insight into my life.

Lots of love,

Heather x

P.s. I didn't feel I could leave my first post without any pictures so enjoy this one of my rabbit Sid.
